What do I need to run KSR?
Being prepared and bringing the right gear will enhance your experience on the Kilimanjaro Stage Run. For this kind of event, you will want good trail running shoes and comfortable clothing. Comfortable clothing will ensure that chafing is minimized and also help to regulate your temperature. New synthetic fabrics can be much more effective at keeping you warm when wet than cotton as well as being comfortable in the heat.
Keep in mind we run only in daylight and in all conditions. Nights and mornings are cool, particularly in mountainous areas where mornings can be quite misty. Days are warm to hot and the sun may be harsh at times. At elevation, cloud cover may moderate the heat to make for a comfortable running temperature in t-shirt and shorts.
The following is not a comprehensive packing list, but includes particular items we suggest for running in Tanzania.
Light pack/fanny pack or hydration pack:
You carry what you need for the running day (in addition to water and snacks, you should have sunscreen, rain gear, etc.). All your other clothing and gear is transported to camp.
Running clothing according to your preference:
Out of respect for communities through which we run, we require that shirts be worn at all times (singlets are okay; jog-bra is not). TIP: long sleeved lightweight fabrics are good to protect from the sun and if going through scratchy vegetation.
Rain jacket:
KSR is run during the dry season, but a chance of rain is possible at any time. In the evening at camp a rain jacket could be useful.
Running tights or rain pants:
Mornings can be slightly cooler in the mountainous areas.
2 pairs running shoes (so 1 pair can dry, if necessary):
Must have good traction, half to full size bigger than normal for toe movement, tried and tested.
Socks:
TIP – avid hot spots by turning your socks inside out so that the seam is not rubbing the toes.
Casual and comfortable clothes and shoes for camp.
Hat with brim for keeping the rain off your face and providing shade.
Bandana or Buff for keeping the sweat out of your eyes.
Tip – Keeping sweat out of the eyes – if this is likely to be a problem, then smearing a small amount of vaseline on your eyebrow works wonders for making sweat run away from your eyes. Alternatively, a wristband can be used to wipe the eyes.
Sunglasses that block UV rays.
Headlamp and spare batteries for camp; we do not run in the dark.
Energy bars, gels, and other supplements: Bring according to your preference.
TIP – Do not use anything new before or during the run!! Try a long run a few weeks before in exactly the same gear as you will use for the event.
Every runner should also bring a small first aid kit for personal use. Your own experience and preferences will influence your choices.
Now you are ready to run with Simon and to live an unforgettable experience!
